James Gunn has announced a special podcast to clarify which events from The Suicide Squad, released in 2021, remain canon in the DCU’s new universe. Questions about the film’s status intensified after characters from the movie returned in other productions from the studio.Titled The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?, the program will consist of a single episode and feature Gunn alongside Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee, who play Emilia Harcourt and John Economos. The discussion will cover the film’s continuity, behind-the-scenes stories and questions submitted by fans.The issue arose during the transition between DC’s universes. The Suicide Squad was produced during the studio’s previous era, but characters and events from the film reappeared in Creature Commandos and the second season of Peacemaker. Both series are part of the same universe as Superman.Gunn had previously described the film as a kind of “imperfect memory” of the DCU. That description suggests that some elements may be carried over into new productions without the entire film automatically becoming part of the continuity.
