Sarah Snook is set to star in an HBO miniseries inspired by The Birds. Still in development, the series will revisit the story told in Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film and Daphne du Maurier's short story of the same name, originally published in 1952. The new version will be set in Alaska.

Snook will play Myra Massey, who returns home with her young daughter while trying to escape a custody battle. Myra is also investigating the mysterious disappearance of a childhood friend. As a killer remains at large, unexplained attacks by violent birds appear to be connected to the crime. Protecting her daughter becomes Myra's immediate priority.

The role marks Snook's return to HBO after four seasons of Succession. She played Shiv Roy on the series, earning three Emmy nominations and one win. She also won two Golden Globes for her performance.

Tom Spezialy will write the pilot. He was an executive producer on Watchmen and The Leftovers. David Heyman, a producer involved in the upcoming Harry Potter series, is also attached to the miniseries.

The project brings together an HBO alumna and a story that draws on two versions of The Birds to create a contemporary thriller. Details released so far focus on Myra, her investigation into the disappearance and the threat posed by the bird attacks. The miniseries remains in development, with no premiere date announced.
