Anne Hathaway will co-star with Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder 2, the sequel to the 1990 racing film. Paramount Pictures has set the release date for June 2, 2028, nearly four decades after the original, directed by Tony Scott.

Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Cole Trickle, the irreverent, determined driver who won over audiences in the first film. Plot details remain under wraps, but Hathaway’s role has been confirmed: she will play the owner and engineer of a racing team.

The sequel will be filmed for IMAX screens and released exclusively in theaters, with screenings also available in formats such as Dolby Cinema and 4DX. Cruise celebrated the actress’s casting by sharing a promotional image of the pair at a NASCAR track.

Jonathan Levine, director of The Spy Who Dumped Me and Mr. Irrelevant, will helm Days of Thunder 2. Tom Cruise will also produce alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper.

In the original film, Cole Trickle was recruited to a new NASCAR team by a legendary retired driver played by Robert Duvall. The cast also included Nicole Kidman, Randy Quaid and John C. Reilly.

The sequel arrives during a busy period for Anne Hathaway. In 2026, the actress will appear in four productions scheduled for theatrical release: Mother Mary, The Devil Wears Prada 2, The Odyssey and The End of Oak Street. She will also star in Verity, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel, and has wrapped filming on the military drama Alone at Dawn, with Adam Driver.

Hathaway is also involved in developing the third Princess Diaries film. Days of Thunder 2 opens on June 2, 2028.
