The Whisper Man debuted at the top of Netflix’s viewing charts in the United States and worldwide. The psychological thriller, starring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan, outperformed Don’t Say Good Luck and The Last House on the platform.

Directed by James Ashcroft, the film adapts Alex North’s bestselling novel and follows a widowed crime writer. After his 8-year-old son is kidnapped, he turns to his estranged father, a retired police detective, for help.

The investigation draws the two into an old case linked to a serial killer known as The Whisper Man. The boy’s kidnapping puts the family’s past at the center of the investigation.

The Whisper Man received a mixed critical response, with the film scoring 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even so, its performance on Netflix put it ahead of Facing El Chapo, a Mexican crime thriller based on true events that gained momentum through word of mouth.

The film also joins a recent run of mid-budget releases that have reached huge audiences on the service. They include Apex, Thrash and The Rip, all of which have surpassed 100 million views this year, while War Machine has topped 150 million.

With De Niro, Scott and Monaghan in the cast, The Whisper Man has cemented its position as Netflix’s most-watched film at the moment.
