10 Fantasy Animes that you can't miss

Anime in general is on an upward spiral of popularity. Celebrating this occasion, we've rounded up 10 essential anime for fantasy fans.

What Counts as "Fantasy"?

"Fantasy" is a pretty broad term. According to the definition in the dictionary, fantasy is everything that does not exist in the real world, something from the imagination, fiction. This is clearly reflected when searching for the genre on MyAnimeList, where we find anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, Naruto and Bleach.

While these animes are undoubtedly figments of the imagination, do they really represent what we think of when we mention the genre? For this list, we decided to focus on more magical worlds far from our own. You will understand better later.

The 10 Recommended Animes

Below are our recommendations, along with their respective ratings on MyAnimeList.

Dungeon Meshi (8.14)

Status: Launching

Genre: Comedy, Adventure, Fantasy

Dungeon Meshi, or Delicious Dungeon, is a perfect anime for D&D fans. With a light atmosphere and diverse characters, the narrative is fun and unpredictable. The story follows a group of adventurers who, after being ambushed by a dragon, need to return to the dungeon to save Falin, the sister of the protagonist Laios, who was devoured.

Without food and money, they need to feed on the monsters in the dungeon. Despite the comical tone, the seriousness increases as the plot progresses. The manga is complete and worth checking out!

Magus Bride (8.06)

Status: Complete

Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Romance

This anime exudes fantasy. Chise Hatori, a fifteen-year-old girl, is purchased by a mysterious wizard, Elias Ainsworth, who makes her his apprentice and, eventually, his bride.

The anime allows us to explore the magical world through Chise's eyes, with beautiful landscapes and magical creatures. Highly recommended for Harry Potter fans.

Little Witch Academia (7.81)

Status: Complete

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy

Little Witch Academia is a celebration of magic and determination. Akko Kagari, an ordinary girl with an extraordinary dream, enrolls at Luna Nova Magical Academy to become a witch like her idol, Shiny Chariot. Despite not having any innate magical abilities, Akko never gives up on her dream, relying on her perseverance and passion.

The anime shines in its vibrant colors and fluid animation, highlighting a world full of magical creatures, enchantments, and captivating adventures. Each episode brings a new lesson and challenge for Akko and her friends, promoting the values of friendship, courage and persistence. Little Witch Academia is perfect for those looking for a magical and inspiring story.

Marshle: Muscle and Magic (7.86)

Status: Launching

Genre: Action, Comedy, Fantasy

Imagine watching Harry Potter, but the protagonist has no magic; instead, he possesses superhuman strength and speed that makes everyone believe he is a wizard. Marshle is clearly a parody of our favorite bespectacled wizard, with many aesthetic similarities, but with a comical narrative and focused on creative struggles.

If you want an anime that makes you laugh in a family setting, Marshle is a great choice.

Helck (7.30)

Status: Complete

Genre: Action, Fantasy

Recommending Helck is difficult due to its average adaptation, especially in animation. However, if you can overcome these barriers, you will not be disappointed. The story begins as a comedy about a human participating in a tournament to become the Demon King, but soon delves into themes of maturity and understanding.

Although the adaptation does not cover the entire story, we recommend reading the manga.

Konosuba (8.51)

Status: Launching

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy

Konosuba, or Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!, follows the story of Kazuma Satou, a young man who dies in a ridiculous way and is transported to a fantasy world. There, he is joined by a useless goddess named Aqua, an explosion-obsessed mage named Megumin, and a masochistic knight named Darkness.

What makes Konosuba so special is its unparalleled humor and the chemistry between the characters. Each episode is filled with hilarious situations and misunderstandings that keep you laughing from start to finish. Furthermore, the series doesn't take itself too seriously, parodying many of the common fantasy anime clichés.

If you're looking for fun and laughter, Konosuba is indispensable.

Re:Zero (8.23)

Status: Complete

Genre: Drama, Fantasy, Suspense

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu is an emotional rollercoaster that takes the protagonist, Subaru Natsuki, to a parallel world. Subaru discovers that he has the ability to rewind time whenever he dies, a power that forces him to face death again and again to protect those he loves.

The series is known for its intense plot and complex characters.

Subaru must fight hopelessness and madness as he tries to unravel the mysteries of this new world and protect his friends. Re:Zero explores deep themes of sacrifice, courage and redemption, making it a captivating work for fans of fantasy and psychological thrillers.

Hunter x Hunter (9.04)

Status: Complete

Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Action

It's hard to believe that an anime fan hasn't seen Hunter x Hunter yet. With one of the best power systems in fiction, Nen, which allows for a wide variety of creative abilities, HxH is a masterpiece.

Each fight is decided by the characters' skill and strategy, not just brute force. With captivating characters and a well-crafted plot, Hunter x Hunter is considered one of the best anime of all time.

Author's Choice, Dorohedoro (8.05)

Genre: Fantasy, Action, Comedy, Horror

With the second season of the anime confirmed, I am more than happy to recommend this series. Do you like action? Of not receiving chewed-up information? A fast-paced story? From authors who aren't afraid to hurt their characters? Having to discover and understand things on your own? Then Dorohedoro is for you! I completely understand that this is not a story for everyone. The level of violence may turn off some, and elements of the world may be difficult to follow for others.

Dorohedoro has a peculiarity in the way he presents the rules of his world. In general, the author prefers to show the elements before explaining them, generating confusion among some viewers. However, in my opinion, this is one of the strongest points of the narrative: letting the audience foster theories on their own, letting us understand the world on our own. Like most of the characters, we don't understand what is happening and have to work with the little information we obtain before the truth is revealed.

I can't recommend Dorohedoro enough to those who enjoy mystery and fantasy. If the points offered interest you, watch!

Editor's Choice, Sousou no Frieren (9.37)

Image content of the Website

Status: Complete

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Fantasy

Maybe it's weird to recommend the literal top anime on MyAnimeList, but wouldn't it be even weirder not to mention Frieren? Frieren is clean, minimalist in his story. Without many loose ends, leaving no room for error. The anime explains and demonstrates every detail of its world to completely immerse us in its narrative, whether through dialogue or other means. And this works perfectly for the story the author wants to tell us.

Sousou no Frieren is another anime about enjoying the journey, but it has another very important theme: time. The anime shows us how important each day is, how small interruptions in an adventure can have as big an impact on the characters as an epic battle. Arriving in a city and eating dessert, remembering your childhood, marks the protagonists as much as defeating a monster in the forest. These moments, if they are not given due importance, are forgotten by time, and our lives, unlike Frieren's, are too short not to enjoy every second of our journey.

There is more to talk about Frieren: maturation, world history, oblivion. There is more, much more. But the best way to understand all these topics is to watch it yourself. If you are waiting to see this anime, watch it!

Conclusion

These 10 fantasy anime represent just a small sample of the vastness and diversity the genre has to offer. From comical and light stories to deep and emotional narratives, each anime selected on this list provides a unique and memorable experience.

If you're a fantasy fan, tell us which anime was missing from the list. What did you think of the choice of publisher and author? To the next!
