The Odyssey has surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide in history, based on unadjusted figures.

Christopher Nolan's epic has taken a record held by the Marvel film since 2024. That year, Deadpool & Wolverine ended its theatrical run with $1.338 billion at the global box office.

In the United States, an R rating restricts admission for unaccompanied minors. The Odyssey received the rating for violence and language, factors that could have limited the film's audience. Even so, the film reached a milestone usually associated with Hollywood's biggest blockbusters.

Ryan Reynolds, star and producer of Deadpool & Wolverine, reacted to the change in the rankings with humor on social media. The actor shared an edit linking a scene featuring Odysseus, played by Matt Damon in The Odyssey, to the well-known fight between Deadpool and Wolverine inside a Honda Odyssey.

The joke connects the two films through the vehicle's name, which echoes the title of Nolan's film and the Greek hero's journey portrayed in the story.

In Brazil, The Odyssey opened on July 16 and remains in theaters.
