Kit Harington, best known for playing Jon Snow in Game of Thrones, has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO's Harry Potter series. He replaces Nicholas Hoult, who had previously been announced for the role.

Hoult exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. Production needed to rearrange the filming of Lockhart's scenes within the new season's schedule, but the actor's existing commitments prevented him from taking part. Harington was available and agreed to take on the character.

Despite the recasting, Gilderoy Lockhart will not be entirely new territory for Harington. He previously voiced the character in the full-cast Harry Potter audiobooks released last year. He has also spoken about his connection to the franchise, saying that he grew up reading the books and followed the saga throughout his teenage years.

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Lockhart serves as Hogwarts' Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. Vain and obsessed with his own fame, he writes books about adventures he claims to have experienced. Kenneth Branagh played Gilderoy Lockhart in the films.

Filming on the second season is expected to begin in the second half of the year. The first season will be based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and is scheduled to premiere in late 2026 on HBO and HBO Max.
