Harry Potter is an upcoming HBO adaptation of J. K. Rowling's seven Harry Potter novels. HBO announced the series in April 2023, calling it a faithful adaptation of the books. In June 2024, the network appointed Francesca Gardiner showrunner and executive producer, with Mark Mylod serving as executive producer and director. The project is planned as a decade-long production, and each season is intended to draw from one novel. The first season adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, published in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. HBO has scheduled the series for 2026 premiere. In April 2025, HBO said Dominic McLaughlin would play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout Ron Weasley. These roles had been played in Warner Bros. films by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. The cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. HBO also cast Luke Thallon as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch. Casting makes the production the first screen version of the novels with a newly assembled principal cast. The story starts when Harry, an orphan living with non-magical relatives, learns on his eleventh birthday that he is a wizard. He enters Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he becomes friends with Ron and Hermione and confronts the legacy of Lord Voldemort, the wizard who murdered his parents. Philosopher's Stone follows the trio as they investigate an object sought by Voldemort. The books expand the conflict through the Chamber of Secrets, Sirius Black's escape from Azkaban, the Triwizard Tournament, the Ministry of Magic, and the Horcruxes that anchor Voldemort's immortality. The novel ends with the Battle of Hogwarts. The new series is produced by HBO, in association with Bronte Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Rowling is an executive producer alongside Gardiner, Mylod, and producers from Bronte Film and TV. The earlier eight-film adaptation, released between 2001 and 2011, made Daniel Radcliffe internationally known as Harry and concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. HBO has said that the television series will allow more time to explore details from Rowling's books than a feature-film format could contain. Production is based at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, England, the studio complex used for the original films.
