Johnny Depp could return as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6. Jerry Bruckheimer, the franchise’s producer, confirmed that he is still in talks with the actor and that the team is working on the script for the new film.

“We are talking with Johnny. We are working on the script and hope to be able to complete the project,” Bruckheimer said during the D23 event, held this Sunday (16) in the United States.

The series’ sixth live-action feature is expected to shift its focus. According to information released about the project, Jack Sparrow would have a supporting role, while the story would center on Margot Robbie’s character. The character’s name has not yet been revealed.

The possibility of Margot Robbie leading a new Pirates of the Caribbean film has been circulating since 2020, when reports emerged that the Barbie actress was in talks to star in a reboot of the universe. So far, Depp’s return and Robbie’s involvement remain part of the ongoing discussions and script development, with neither the full cast nor a release date confirmed.

The franchise follows the adventures of pirate Jack Sparrow and began in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The story is based on a ride at Disney theme parks.

The five films starring Johnny Depp have collectively grossed US$ 4.5 billion at the worldwide box office. The most recent installment was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, released in 2017. With US$ 745 million in box office returns, it had the lowest gross among the films in the series.

The sixth film is still in the scripting stage, and the project’s completion depends on the progress of talks with Johnny Depp.
