Disney confirmed Zootopia 3 during the D23 event in Anaheim. Ginnifer Goodwin and Ke Huy Quan took the stage to announce the franchise’s next film, which will center on birds.

Goodwin voices Judy Hopps, the police rabbit introduced in the original film, while Quan joined the cast of Zootopia 2 as Gary De’Snake. The new project continues the animated series launched in 2016, but no plot details or release date have been announced.

The franchise follows Judy and Nick Wilde, a con artist fox voiced by Jason Bateman. In the first film, the pair started out as adversaries after Judy joined the Zootopia Police Department. They set aside their differences to investigate a mystery in the animal-populated city.

Released last year, Zootopia 2 earned US$ 1.8 billion at the worldwide box office and became the highest-grossing Hollywood animated film of all time. The sequel also made history during its opening weekend, posting the fourth-biggest global debut at the time and the largest worldwide opening ever for an animated film.

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Zootopia 2 also received an Oscar nomination for best animated feature. The cast included Fortune Feimster as beaver podcaster Nibbles Maplestick, alongside Andy Samberg, David Strathairn, Macaulay Culkin, Brenda Song, Quinta Brunson, Robert Irwin and Patrick Warburton.

The first Zootopia grossed more than US$ 1 billion worldwide and spawned the Disney+ spin-off series Zootopia+. Zootopia 3 will take the story in a new direction by placing birds at the center of the adventure.
