The digital sketch The Smile Clinic, which aired during the eighth season of SNL Korea, is being developed into a 10-episode sitcom, with each episode running 30 minutes. The project will be produced by CP Entertainment for South Korean streaming platform Coupang Play.

The series will explore South Korea’s aesthetic dermatology market and workplace relationships at a clinic. Lee Su-ji, Kim Won-hun, Gong Min-jeung, Kim Kyu-won and Ji Ye-eun will reprise the roles they played in the sketch.

According to NBCUniversal Formats, which licenses the Saturday Night Live format and struck the deal with Coupang Play, The Smile Clinic videos have surpassed 17 million views on YouTube. That success helped pave the way for the content to be expanded into a longer format.

Linfield Ng, NBCUniversal Formats’ vice president of format sales and production, said the sketch has become one of South Korea’s most viral digital properties. He said its combination of office politics and Korean beauty culture makes it relatable to audiences in different markets, while its characters already have an established fan base.

The production also marks the first time a sketch from an international version of SNL has received this kind of adaptation. In the United States, Wayne’s World and Coneheads were adapted into films. MacGruber became a film in 2010 and returned as a Peacock series in 2021.

The expansion comes as the franchise continues to grow internationally. The British version of SNL has received a positive critical response and recently featured Wicked star Cynthia Erivo as host. Broadcaster Canal+ has also announced a French version of the show.

NBCUniversal Formats has further expanded its presence in Asia by acquiring worldwide distribution rights to the Japanese shows Save Money and Action Arena, as well as Unboxing the Flavours.
