Prime Video has released the first official images from Bloodaxe, a new drama series created and written by Michael Hirst, known for Vikings and The Tudors. The series follows Erik Bloodaxe’s rise to the throne of Norway alongside his queen, amid power struggles, fragile alliances and betrayals.

Xavier Molyneux plays Erik Bloodaxe, while Jessica Madsen portrays Gunnhild, his queen. Levi Miller also joins the cast, alongside Karlis Arnolds Avots, Rod Hallett, Alina Tomnikov, Sisse Marie, Rune Temte, Jesper Christensen, Marc Rissmann and Arthur McBain.

The story features ruthless rivals, other Scandinavian kings and a powerful English ruler. War threatens to devastate entire kingdoms as the couple struggles to maintain control in a world shaped by conflict and shifting alliances.

Reuther will play Jarl Sigurd, ruler of Hladir and an ally of Haakon, played by Levi Miller. Haakon is Erik’s younger half-brother. Taittonen, meanwhile, will portray Knut, one of Gunnhild’s brothers, torn between loyalty to his sister and to their father, King Gorm of Denmark, played by Rune Temte.

Produced by MGM Television, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, Bloodaxe will begin filming in Ireland and Iceland later this summer. Michael Hirst and his son, Horatio, are writing the series and serving as executive producers alongside Morgan O’Sullivan, Steve Stark and Fred Toye.

Bloodaxe will be Hirst’s third Norse series. Following Vikings, the creator also oversaw Vikings: Valhalla, a production made in partnership with Netflix. The new series does not yet have a premiere date and is among Prime Video’s upcoming historical drama projects.
