Edward Berger

Edward Berger is a German filmmaker best known for directing All Quiet on the Western Front, the 2022 German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 anti-war novel. Born in Wolfsburg, Germany, in 1970, Berger studied German literature and theatre studies at the Technical University of Braunschweig before attending New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. His early professional work included directing episodes of German television series and making television films, establishing a career in both German and international productions.

Berger directed the 2012 television film A Good Summer, based on a novel by Wilhelm Genazino, and followed it with Jack in 2014. Jack centers on a ten-year-old boy who becomes responsible for his younger brother after their unstable mother repeatedly fails them. The film was selected for competition at the Berlin International Film Festival and was chosen as Germany's submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, although it was not nominated.

His 2015 film Hannes told the story of two close teenage friends after one is severely injured in a motorcycle accident. Berger also worked extensively in television, including directing episodes of the series Deutschland 83 and serving as director on the Showtime miniseries Patrick Melrose. The latter adaptation of Edward St Aubyn's novels starred Benedict Cumberbatch as an aristocratic British man confronting addiction, childhood trauma, and his relationship with his abusive father.

All Quiet on the Western Front became Berger's most internationally celebrated feature. Starring Felix Kammerer as the young German soldier Paul Baumer, the film follows Paul and his school friends as their patriotic enthusiasm collapses amid the trench warfare of the First World War. Berger's version added several narrative elements not found in Remarque's novel, including the political negotiations surrounding the 1918 armistice and the character of General Friedrichs. Released by Netflix, it won seven BAFTA Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Director for Berger. At the 95th Academy Awards, it won four Oscars: International Feature Film, Cinematography, Production Design, and Original Score. It also received nominations for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, Sound, and Visual Effects.

In 2024, Berger directed Conclave, adapted from Robert Harris's 2016 novel. The film stars Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, who oversees a secret papal election after the death of a pope. Its cast also includes Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini. Berger has described his interest in stories shaped by institutions, moral pressure, and characters forced to act within systems larger than themselves.
