Glória Menezes died at the age of 91 on Tuesday (18) in Rio de Janeiro. The actress's family confirmed her death. She died at home of natural causes.

Over a career spanning more than 60 years, Glória Menezes built one of the longest-lasting careers in Brazilian television drama. She appeared in telenovelas including “Irmãos Coragem” (1970), “Guerra dos Sexos” (1983), “Brega & Chique” (1987), “Rainha da Sucata” (1990) and “A Favorita” (2008).

Her final telenovela was “Totalmente Demais”, which aired between 2015 and 2016.

The actress played a pivotal role in a groundbreaking chapter of Brazilian television. In 1963, she starred in TV Excelsior's “2-5499 Ocupado”, considered Brazil's first daily telenovela. It was during that production that she acted opposite Tarcísio Meira, to whom she was married for 59 years.

Film was also part of her career. Glória Menezes appeared in nine feature films, including “Lampião, o Rei do Cangaço”, “Independência ou Morte” and “Para Viver um Grande Amor”.

Her first big-screen role was tied to a landmark of Brazilian cinema. In Anselmo Duarte's “O Pagador de Promessas” (1962), she played Rosa opposite Leonardo Villar. The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and remains the only Brazilian film to win the festival's top prize. It was also nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

Glória Menezes's death was announced on the same day the country also bid farewell to Laura Cardoso, an actress who died at the age of 98 in São Paulo on Monday night (17).
