Silo

Silo is an American science-fiction drama series created by Graham Yost for Apple TV+, adapted from Hugh Howey’s Wool novels. It premiered on May 5, 2023, with Rebecca Ferguson playing Juliette Nichols, an engineer in a vast underground silo whose population believes Earth’s surface is lethally toxic. The show begins with Sheriff Holston Becker, portrayed by David Oyelowo, requesting permission to “go outside,” an act that sends citizens to clean the exterior sensors before dying in view of the silo’s cameras. His wife, Allison, played by Rashida Jones, had already challenged the official story surrounding the world beyond the airlock itself.

Juliette is drawn into the investigation after Holston selects her as his successor, despite her work in the mechanical levels far below the silo’s political center. Common, credited as Robert Sims, portrays the head of Judicial security, while Tim Robbins plays Bernard Holland, the mild-mannered head of IT. Harriet Walter appears as Martha Walker, Juliette’s agoraphobic mentor and colleague. Avi Nash plays Lukas Kyle, a technician interested in forbidden astronomical observations. As Juliette uncovers deleted records and dangerous implications of an old hard drive from before the rebellion, she clashes with the silo’s rigid rules against asking questions about the past.

The first season’s final episodes reveal that the silo is not alone: Juliette’s cleaning ends with her stepping onto the surface and seeing numerous other silos across a devastated landscape. That image resolves the season’s central mystery without establishing that the outside is safe. The second season, which began on November 15, 2024, follows Juliette in Silo 17, where she encounters Solo, played by Steve Zahn. Back in Silo 18, Bernard confronts unrest after Juliette’s apparent discovery, and the series continues to explore who controls information, memory, and the machines keeping the community alive underneath its concrete walls every day.

Ferguson is an executive producer on Silo. The production uses the verticality of its setting as a narrative fact: residents travel stairwells rather than elevators, and distance between Mechanical and the upper levels shapes communication, authority, and response times. Its cast includes Chinaza Uche as Paul Billings, the deputy sheriff whose syndrome affects his hands, and Rick Gomez as Patrick Kennedy, a smuggler with connections to Juliette. The series was renewed for a third and fourth season in December 2024; Apple said the fourth would be its final season, allowing Howey’s story to be brought to a conclusion on screen.
