The Gilded Age is an HBO historical drama created by Julian Fellowes, the writer of Downton Abbey. It premiered on January 24, 2022, and is set in New York City during the early 1880s, a period of rapid industrial expansion and conspicuous wealth. Rather than treating that era as a vague backdrop, the series builds its central conflict around the collision between established Manhattan families and rich railroad fortunes.
The story begins after the death of Marian Brook's father. With little money, Marian travels from Pennsylvania to New York and enters the household of her wealthy aunts Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook. Agnes represents old New York's traditions, while Ada, played by Cynthia Nixon, is gentler and more open to change. Marian, portrayed by Louisa Jacobson, becomes a viewpoint character as she negotiates marriage expectations, social rules, and the city's competitive elite.
A parallel narrative follows Peggy Scott, a Black writer from Brooklyn played by Denée Benton. Peggy meets Marian at a train station and temporarily stays with the van Rhijn household, but the arrangement exposes the racial and economic barriers shaping her ambitions. The show gives Peggy a professional goal—becoming a published author—while connecting her personal story to Black family life, education, journalism, and migration in the post-Reconstruction North.
The Russell family embodies new money. George Russell, played by Morgan Spector, is a railroad businessman; his wife, Bertha, played by Carrie Coon, pursues social acceptance with strategic determination. Their daughter Gladys is kept under Bertha's control, while their son Larry studies architecture with the architect Stanford White, a detail that links the fictional family to New York's artistic and building culture.
The opera-house rivalry between the old Academy of Music and the new Metropolitan Opera reflects an actual struggle over cultural power in New York. The production also recreates period interiors, clothing, servants' routines, and etiquette to show that class depended on more than money: it required access, family connections, and public approval.
In its second season, which premiered on October 29, 2023, the series continues the opera conflict while developing Marian's relationship with Larry, Bertha's attempt to secure a place for the Russells, and Peggy's return to Brooklyn after revelations about her family. Across its episodes, The Gilded Age uses social events and negotiations to dramatize a historical transition: inherited status is losing its monopoly, but the people challenging it must still learn its rules.
