The Dropout is an eight-episode Hulu miniseries released in 2022, dramatizing the rise and collapse of Theranos, the blood-testing company founded by Elizabeth Holmes. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, the series is adapted from ABC News correspondent Rebecca Jarvis’s podcast and book reporting. It follows Holmes from her decision to leave Stanford University and pursue a medical technology venture through Theranos’s celebrated expansion and exposure. Amanda Seyfried plays Holmes, while Naveen Andrews portrays Sunny Balwani, her romantic partner and company president. The production combines boardroom drama with investigative journalism, making its central conflict the gap between Theranos’s promises and its actual capabilities.

At the beginning, Holmes presents herself as a determined Stanford dropout who wants to transform healthcare by making blood testing faster and less invasive. Theranos promotes the Edison device as capable of running many tests from a small finger-prick sample. The show depicts Holmes cultivating powerful support, including former secretaries of state Henry Kissinger and George Shultz on the board. It also shows Walgreens entering a partnership with Theranos and placing testing centers in Arizona stores. Holmes insists on secrecy, invoking trade secrets and national security, while employees struggle with unreliable results and pressure from management to maintain the company’s image.

Several characters embody the costs of that pressure. Erika Cheung and Tyler Shultz, portrayed by Camryn Mi-Young Kim and Dylan Minnette, are employees who question Theranos’s testing practices. Tyler is troubled after discovering that his grandfather, George Shultz, has accepted the company’s assurances despite internal warnings. Richard Fuisz, portrayed by William H. Macy, represents an older business dispute involving Holmes’s family and early patent claims. Meanwhile, reporter John Carreyrou, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, begins investigating Theranos for The Wall Street Journal. His conversations with whistleblowers and former employees lead to articles that challenge the company’s claims and trigger retaliation.

The episodes depict regulatory scrutiny, investor anxiety, and the collapse of Theranos’s partnerships. Holmes and Balwani face federal charges after prosecutors allege that they defrauded investors and patients. The series dramatizes Holmes’s 2018 arrest and later trial without pretending that a courtroom verdict settles every question about ambition, charisma, or responsibility. It also emphasizes patients who received inaccurate test results, keeping the human consequences alongside the corporate spectacle. Seyfried’s performance received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series, and the program earned additional attention for its sharply observed reconstruction of Silicon Valley culture, media hype, and whistleblower risk.
