The Odyssey has surpassed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 at the worldwide box office, extending Christopher Nolan's string of records. After a month in theaters, the film is already the biggest success of the director's career in the United States and worldwide.

The epic also overtook Deadpool & Wolverine to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history worldwide. Along the way, The Odyssey also surpassed The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, two other major Nolan hits.

The production will face Spider-Man: Brand New Day for much of its theatrical run. The competition between the two titles appears to have boosted the film's performance, in a dynamic compared to that of Oppenheimer, which Nolan released in 2023 alongside Barbie.

Starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson, The Odyssey offers Nolan's more grounded take on Homer's Greek epic poem. The work had previously inspired films by the filmmaker, who nearly brought the story to the screen more than two decades ago when he was attached to Troy.

Nolan ultimately directed Batman Begins, while Troy went in another direction. Now, The Odyssey has already earned nearly three times as much as that film worldwide.

Its reception has also matched its commercial performance. The film holds a 94% approval rating among critics and 97% with audiences on a review aggregator, earning the “Certified Fresh” and “Verified Hot” labels, respectively. Critical reception has praised the scale of the adventure, the cast's work and the way Nolan brings human feeling to the myth.

Beyond its box office strength, The Odyssey is already being seen as an Oscar contender in several major categories.
