Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the top spot on the list of the highest-grossing films in cinema history. Seven years after its original release, the Marvel film has overtaken Avatar to retake the worldwide lead, without adjusting for inflation. The turnaround came after the re-release of Avengers: Endgame Encore, which brought the film back to theaters with previously unseen footage. According to figures reported this weekend, Endgame has reached approximately US$ 2.926 billion in worldwide box office returns, while Avatar stands at around US$ 2.924 billion. The difference between the two films is approximately US$ 2 million, but it was enough to put the Marvel production back in first place. The re-release began on September 25 and grossed US$ 86 million during its first weekend, including US$ 26 million in North America and US$ 60 million in international markets. At that point, Avengers: Endgame was still about US$ 39 million behind Avatar. One week later, the film added approximately US$ 18 million to its worldwide total, reaching the figures needed to overtake it.The rivalry between the two titles began in 2019, when Endgame surpassed James Cameron's film after its original release. Avatar reclaimed the lead in 2021 after returning to theaters in China, then extended its advantage through further re-releases, including another theatrical run in 2022, ahead of the release of Avatar: The Way of Water. The return of Avengers: Endgame also helped prepare audiences for Avengers: Doomsday, the MCU's next major character crossover. The new version retains the 2019 film and adds previously unseen material related to Doctor Doom's appearances during the credits. The lead could change again: the difference between the two films remains small, and both could still increase their totals if they return to theaters.
