Grim Affliction, Instant, designed by Erica Yang first released in May, 2020 in the set New Phyrexia and was printed exactly in 3 different ways.
This card, Grim Affliction, would be beneficial in a deck that focuses on -1/-1 counters and proliferate mechanics, such as a Golgari or Sultai themed deck. While Grim Affliction is a solid choice for such a strategy, a potentially better card to consider would be Contagion Clasp, which offers a similar effect but at a lower cost and with the added flexibility of being able to target planeswalkers as well. Overall, Grim Affliction could see play in decks looking to control the board and weaken opposing creatures, but players may want to consider other options depending on their specific deck strategy and needs.

Players can respond to a spell or ability whose effect includes proliferating. Once that spell or ability starts to resolve, however, and its controller chooses which permanents and players will get new counters, it’s too late for anyone to respond.

To proliferate, you can choose any permanent that has a counter, including ones controlled by opponents. You can’t choose cards in any zone other than the battlefield, even if they have counters on them.

You may choose the creature you put the -1/-1 counter on to get another -1/-1 counter when proliferating.
