The Diplomat returns for a fourth season, maintaining the pace of a political thriller and, according to the review, reaching its high point so far. The Netflix series has earned ten Emmy nominations, including two for Outstanding Drama Series. In September, Allison Janney won an Emmy for her performance in the third season.

The new season picks up moments after Kate Wyler, the U.S. ambassador played by Keri Russell, discovers that President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler stole the Poseidon superweapon from Russia. Kate learns the truth after lying to British Prime Minister Trowbridge to broker a deal between the United States and the United Kingdom. She has also just repaired her marriage to Hal.

[s]Kate faces mounting pressure at work and at home, while political shifts put her decisions and her stability at risk.[/s] The season sustains that tension throughout, with episodes that build in intensity and often end with surprises that upend pivotal moments.

Russell remains at the center of the story, but the supporting cast takes on new roles. Allison Janney retains her commanding presence as Grace Penn, a performance that, according to the review, could earn her another Emmy nomination. Bradley Whitford also joins the regular cast as the first gentleman, whose attempt to help his hawkish wife threatens to destabilize Western alliances.

Jodie Whittaker, known for Doctor Who, makes her series debut as Bethan Vaughn, a skilled politician whose intelligence opens up a new possibility for relations between the United States and the United Kingdom. Depending on where her loyalties lie, she could become a close friend or a fierce rival to Kate.

The fourth season also delves deeper into Trowbridge, played by Rory Kinnear, exploring his worldview in episode 4, titled “Pagliacci.” The approach adds layers to the character without losing sight of the series’ central conflict.
