Judi Dench has revealed that she can no longer act in plays or films because of vision loss caused by age-related macular degeneration. Diagnosed with the condition in 2012, the British actress also said she can no longer read.

“I can’t be on stage. I can’t do a play anymore. I can’t do a film anymore. I can’t read anymore,” Dench told BBC Radio 4’s Today.

Age-related macular degeneration affects central vision by damaging the macula, the area at the center of the retina. In Dench’s case, her vision loss has also led to embarrassing situations. She said that on several occasions she had approached the wrong person and nearly hugged them because she could not identify them properly.

At 91, the Oscar winner is no longer appearing on stage or in film productions, but she intends to continue making public appearances and speaking about her condition. The actress emphasized the importance of radio in her life: “Radio has always been important to me.”

Dench had been discussing the possibility of retiring in recent years, since revealing her diagnosis. Her most recent work was as a voice actor in The Magic Faraway Tree, a film based on Enid Blyton’s book series. In the film, she voiced a smart refrigerator invented by Polly, played by Claire Foy. The film was released early this year.

Her final on-screen appearances include 2021’s Belfast, 2022’s Allelujah and a cameo in Spirited, also released in 2022. The actress now plans to maintain her presence at public events and use those opportunities to speak about macular degeneration.
