Activision will oversee production of the next Halo game as part of a reorganization at Xbox. The change comes after the company announced plans to lay off 268 more employees and strengthen its franchises through fewer business units.

Under the new structure, Activision will take charge of titles previously overseen by World’s Edge and Rare. As a result, the studio behind Call of Duty will also lead the future of Xbox’s science-fiction series.

Matt Booty, Xbox’s head of content, said Halo will be handled by “an entirely new team, created for a specific purpose,” separate from the ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty. Meanwhile, a smaller team at Halo Studios will continue supporting the community and the games already available on the market.

The next phase of Halo will be produced under Activision’s supervision.

The franchise returned in 2026 with Halo: Campaign Evolved, a ground-up remake of the first game in the series. The release also marked the historic debut of a Halo title on PlayStation, in addition to the Xbox ecosystem.

However, its presence on a competing console is not expected to become a recurring practice, according to the information available. In the meantime, Xbox’s reorganization is redefining who will work on upcoming projects for one of the franchises most closely associated with the brand.
