Sons of Anarchy is an American crime drama created by Kurt Sutter for FX. It premiered on September 3, 2008, and ended after seven seasons on December 9, 2014, comprising 92 episodes. The story centers on the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original, usually called SAMCRO, an outlaw motorcycle club based in the fictional Northern California town of Charming. Charlie Hunnam plays Jackson “Jax” Teller, the club’s vice president when the series begins. Jax discovers writings left by his late father, John Teller, a SAMCRO cofounder, and begins questioning the club’s criminal direction as its violence increasingly harms Charming. Katey Sagal portrays Gemma Teller Morrow, Jax’s mother and the wife of Clay Morrow, SAMCRO’s president, played by Ron Perlman. The central cast also includes Mark Boone Junior as Robert “Bobby Elvis” Munson, Kim Coates as Alex “Tig” Trager, Tommy Flanagan as Filip “Chibs” Telford, and Ryan Hurst as Harry “Opie” Winston. Maggie Siff plays Dr. Tara Knowles, Jax’s former love and later wife. Dayton Callie appears as Police Chief Wayne Unser, while David LaBrava, a former Hells Angel, plays club member Happy Lowman and served as a technical adviser on the production during the show’s early seasons as well. Sutter drew on Shakespeare’s Hamlet when developing the show, particularly the conflict between Jax and Clay following John Teller’s death. The series combines family drama with plots involving gunrunning, drug trafficking, rival gangs, law enforcement, and conflicts with the Irish Republican Army-linked gun suppliers known as the Real IRA. Its opening setting, Charming, is located in the fictional San Joaquin County, although later seasons expand to places including Oakland, Stockton, Oregon, Belfast, and Nevada. The club’s legal business is Teller-Morrow Automotive Repair, but its members protect and profit from criminal enterprises that endanger their families and Charming over time. The show received substantial recognition during its run. Katey Sagal won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama for her performance as Gemma in 2011. Sons of Anarchy was also a major ratings success for FX and became one of the network’s defining original dramas. Its final season follows Jax after the death of Tara and his escalating pursuit of vengeance. The finale, “Papa’s Goods,” was written by Sutter and directed by Paris Barclay. It resolves Jax’s story with his death, while leaving SAMCRO under new leadership and a profoundly uncertain future behind for everyone.
