James Laxton

James Laxton is an American cinematographer known especially for his collaborations with writer-director Barry Jenkins. He photographed Jenkins’s first feature, Medicine for Melancholy (2008), a San Francisco story centered on Micah and Jo, two Black twenty-somethings who spend a day together after meeting at a party. The film established a working relationship that later produced Moonlight (2016), adapted from Tarell Alvin McCraney’s unproduced play, In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. In Moonlight, Laxton photographed Chiron’s life in three sections, with Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevante Rhodes portraying the character as a child, teenager, and adult. Its Miami settings include Liberty City, the neighborhood associated with Chiron’s childhood. Laxton received an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography for Moonlight, placing him among the five nominees at the 89th Academy Awards. The film won Best Picture, while Jenkins and McCraney won for Adapted Screenplay and Mahershala Ali won Supporting Actor. Laxton’s photography is closely tied to Moonlight’s shifting palette: the film uses saturated blues, pinks, and purples to frame Chiron’s changing sense of self throughout its three distinct chapters. The camera repeatedly stays close to Chiron, notably in the ocean sequence with Juan, played by Ali. After Moonlight, Laxton photographed Jenkins’s If Beale Street Could Talk (2018), adapted from James Baldwin’s 1974 novel. Set in 1970s Harlem, it follows Tish Rivers and Alonzo “Fonny” Hunt as they try to prove Fonny’s innocence after his wrongful arrest. KiKi Layne plays Tish, and Stephan James plays Fonny. Regina King received the Academy Award for Supporting Actress for playing Tish’s mother, Sharon. Laxton also served as cinematographer on The Underground Railroad (2021), Jenkins’s Amazon limited series based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. The series reimagines the Underground Railroad as an actual subterranean rail system and centers on Cora Randall, played by Thuso Mbedu. He photographed The Old Guard (2020), directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and adapted from Greg Rucka’s comic series. The action film stars Charlize Theron as Andy, the leader of a group of immortal mercenaries. For these projects, Laxton has worked repeatedly with Jenkins on stories concerned with Black life, memory, family, and systems of confinement. His credits trace a career from Jenkins’s low-budget debut to an Oscar-winning feature and a major streaming miniseries. Rather than treating those works as disconnected assignments, the record of his filmography shows an enduring creative partnership with Jenkins across cinema and television that spans eighteen years.
