Peter Cullen, best known for voicing Optimus Prime in Transformers and the melancholy Eeyore in Winnie-the-Pooh productions, died Wednesday at the age of 85. The news was confirmed by his agent, Kevin Motley.

The actor died at the family home in Los Angeles, surrounded by relatives. In a statement, his family said Cullen was “surrounded by his loving family and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans around the world.”

The family also asked that the artist’s legacy be honored through service to local communities and leadership grounded in compassion, integrity and loyalty. The message ended with a line attributed to Cullen: “be strong enough to be kind.”

With hundreds of credits to his name, Peter Cullen built an extensive career as a voice actor. His most iconic role was Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots, whom he portrayed across various Transformers series, films and games.

Cullen created Optimus Prime’s deep, authoritative voice for the animated series The Transformers, released in the 1980s. The show followed the war between the Autobots and Decepticons and later spawned a feature film.

The actor was also closely associated with Eeyore, the melancholy character from Winnie-the-Pooh. Cullen worked on several projects connected to the franchise, expanding a career that spanned numerous forms of animation and entertainment.
