Sony Pictures has acquired the film rights to Mouthwashing. Karyn Kusama is attached to direct, with Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi writing the screenplay. The three previously worked together on The Invitation and Destroyer.Scott Derrickson, director of Sinister and The Black Phone, will produce alongside C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng through Crooked Highway. The team has experience with suspense-driven stories, but no cast or release date has been announced.Developed by Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, Mouthwashing follows five crew members aboard the Tulpar, a space freighter damaged in an accident. Supplies are running low, rescue is uncertain, and relations among the crew deteriorate. The game builds much of its horror within that confined space. The story does not unfold in chronological order. It moves between events before and after the disaster, gradually revealing the decisions that left the characters stranded aboard the ship. Conversations and details introduced at different points change how players understand the crew. Going further into those revelations would spoil key parts of the story. For the film, Kusama and the writers will have to make that structure work without the time for exploration the game gives players. The adaptation will also need to preserve the tension between its five characters rather than rely solely on the Tulpar’s setting. For now, the announced creative team offers the clearest indication of how Mouthwashing will make the leap to film.Via Collider.
