The Golden Globes have rejected Michael's submission for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. If the decision stands, the Michael Jackson biopic will have to compete in the drama category. Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, can still appeal the classification before submissions close on October 31.

The dispute centers on the role music plays in the story. Under Golden Globes rules, performances alone do not make a film a musical: the songs must help advance the plot. The committee found that the musical numbers in Michael do not drive the narrative enough to qualify it for the category.

The potential switch would have a particular impact on Jaafar Jackson's awards campaign. Jackson makes his film debut playing his uncle, and if Michael remains in the drama category, that is where his performance would compete. The change would not affect Colman Domingo, who plays Joe Jackson, in the same way: supporting acting categories are not divided between drama and musical or comedy.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, Michael follows the artist from the discovery of his talent as the Jackson Five's lead singer through the start of his solo career. The film combines offstage moments with performances from that period. The cast also includes Nia Long, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier and Juliano Krue Valdi.

Graham King serves as executive producer alongside John Branca and John McClain, who are associated with Michael Jackson's estate. Lionsgate can still appeal the Golden Globes' decision before the film's category is finalized.
