Blade Runner 2049 returned to the top 10 most-watched titles in the United States on Paramount+ and Prime Video at different points this month. The film’s return to the rankings comes ahead of the premiere of Blade Runner 2099, an eight-episode series that will continue the franchise.Ridley Scott, director of the original 1982 Blade Runner, is one of the new series’ executive producers and will produce every episode. He will not direct any of them. The series is set to premiere on Prime Video on November 25, but that date should not be mistaken for the reason the film has climbed the rankings: interest in the movie grew before the series arrived.Blade Runner 2099 will star Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer. The story is set in a world where the balance of power between humans and replicants has shifted. Tom Burke also has a major role in the cast. The series is expected to have a tone closer to the first Blade Runner. People involved in the production have already pointed to that connection, even though the story serves as a sequel to both Scott’s film and Blade Runner 2049, released in 2017.The new project comes at a time of mixed fortunes for Scott. His latest science-fiction film, The Dog Stars, featured names including Josh Brolin, Jacob Elordi and Margaret Qualley, but earned less than US$ 30 million at the box office. The director also has another film scheduled for next year: a new adaptation of Treasure Island, starring Hugh Jackman, with Hugh Grant and Owen Cooper in the cast. Jack Thorne wrote the screenplay. As those projects take different paths, Blade Runner 2049 is drawing viewers back on streaming services. The series starring Yeoh and Schafer is set to premiere on Prime Video on November 25.
