The community of Snook’s Arm is on the verge of disappearing, but a sea monster could change the fate of its residents. That is the premise of Below, a Netflix thriller series starring Josh Hartnett.

Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a fisherman who lives in a remote town in Newfoundland, Canada. With fishing all but banned in the area, residents have taken to collecting drifting ice and selling it to a local vodka company.

The community also faces a vote. Five years earlier, residents rejected a government offer to relocate. Now a new referendum could spell the end of Snook’s Arm: the threshold for approval has dropped from 90% to 75%, and support for the proposal is growing. Calvin and his family could play a decisive role, including his sister Ruth (Willow Kean), the harbor master, and his son Wade (Charlie Heaton).

As Calvin tries to save the town, he realizes something strange is happening at sea. A Portuguese fishing boat vanishes without a trace; the vodka company rejects an oily-looking block of ice with a strong smell; and a massive iceberg appears in the harbor. Then more people go missing, and human body parts begin washing up in the water.

The only person willing to take Calvin’s concerns seriously is Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis), a marine zoologist. Natasha Henstridge and Ruby Stokes also star.

Created by Jesse McKeown, of The Umbrella Academy, Below has six episodes, most of them about 40 minutes long. The story begins in 1986, with a family transporting their home across the bay on a ferry. Four decades later, it follows the residents of Snook’s Arm as they face disputes over the town’s future and a creature capable of sinking ships.

The production combines real locations in Newfoundland with computer-generated elements such as icebergs, and leans on a fast-paced story that blends suspense and humor.
