Alan Cumming said he does not fully understand the plot of Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel’s upcoming film in which he reprises his role as the mutant Nightcrawler. In an interview with SiriusXM, the actor said he did not have access to the full script and finished filming without a clear idea of what was happening around his character.“To be honest, I don’t fully understand the plot,” Cumming said. According to the actor, his role during part of the production amounted to running back and forth. He said that, in one of the few scenes filmed without a blue screen, someone tried to explain the presence of enormous robots in the sequence.Cumming preferred to receive only practical instructions about where he should point and how he should move through the action. “All I know is that I’m here to run,” he said. The actor also said he ran into Florence Pugh at the Emmys and discovered that the two had filmed scenes together without ever meeting in person. In one scene, Cumming stood over the body of Pugh’s character, but the sequence was filmed with the actress’s stunt double. Pugh, in turn, also used Cumming’s stunt double in another scene. In Avengers: Doomsday, Cumming shares the screen with other actors returning from the X-Men films, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn and James Marsden. The actor first played Nightcrawler in X2: X-Men United and did not appear in the franchise’s subsequent films, making the new movie his first opportunity to play the character in 23 years.Cumming also explained that the mutant’s makeup process has become faster. Previously, application took about four hours, with the tattoos drawn by hand. Now, the process takes 90 minutes, and the designs are applied directly to his face. Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18.
