Spider-Man: Brand New Day has topped the domestic box office and become the highest-grossing film in history in that market. The Sony film has earned US$ 936.7 million, surpassing the final total of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which held the record for ten years with US$ 936.66 million.The figure includes the cumulative total through yesterday. On Tuesday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day grossed US$ 915,000, enough to overtake the Star Wars film and set a new record.Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, the film hit theaters on July 31. The result also makes it Sony’s highest-grossing film, as well as the biggest commercial success of Cretton’s and Zendaya’s careers.Worldwide, Spider-Man: Brand New Day ranks third, with US$ 2.45 billion. It trails 2009’s Avatar, which has grossed US$ 2.92 billion, and Avengers: Endgame, with US$ 2.799 billion.The gap with the second-place film could widen later this month. Avengers: Endgame will be re-released in theaters, a move expected to boost its box office total and increase its lead over Spider-Man: Brand New Day.For Tom Holland, the performance also marks the biggest box-office success of his career.
