A Disney acknowledged that the recent releases of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and the live-action version of Moana performed below the studio’s projections during the summer season. Even so, the company rejects classifying the films as failures.

Josh D’Amaro, Disney’s CEO, explained that the titles are part of a larger ecosystem and can generate results across different areas of the company. [m{Box office revenue is only one part of the value of these franchises.}]

In the case of The Mandalorian and Grogu, the executive highlighted the growth in Star Wars merchandise sales, the increased interest in the updated Millennium Falcon attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and greater engagement with the franchise’s games.

The live-action version of Moana, meanwhile, is viewed by Disney as a potential standout on Disney+. This expectation continues the performance of the original animated film, cited as one of the most-watched movies in streaming history. The film is still showing in theaters nationwide.

In its official financial report, Disney emphasized that investments in its franchises helped generate value far beyond theatrical releases. Hugh Johnston, the company’s chief financial officer, also stated that the group’s diversified model helps offset fluctuations in the industry.

The live-action story follows a young woman who sets out on a mission to save her people. During the journey, she meets Maui, a demigod who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they cross the ocean.

Thomas Kail, of Hamilton, directs the film. Jared Bush, the screenwriter of the original animated film, wrote the screenplay alongside Dana Ledoux Miller. Dwayne Johnson is involved in the production through Seven Bucks Productions, in partnership with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, as well as Beau Flynn of Flynn Picture Co.

The original animated film grossed US$687.2 million worldwide and achieved a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
