The Atypical Family

The Atypical Family is a 2024 Korean series, airing on JTBC from May 4 to June 9, 2024. Its twelve episodes also streamed internationally on Netflix. Its Korean title, Hieoroneun Anijiman, is “Although I Am Not a Hero.” The drama is built around the Bok household, whose members once possessed extraordinary powers. Rather than presenting those abilities as gifts, the series ties their disappearance to contemporary illnesses and habits. This premise gives its fantasy story a family focus: the Boks are not merely superheroes, but people whose bodies and emotional states have changed what they can do in the world. Jang Ki-yong plays Bok Gwi-ju, a man who formerly traveled back to moments of happiness but cannot use that power after depression overtakes him. Go Doo-shim portrays his mother, Bok Man-heum, whose dreams can reveal the future; insomnia eventually blocks that ability. Claudia Kim plays Bok Dong-hee, Gwi-ju's sister, who once flew but loses the capacity after gaining weight. Park So-yi appears as I-na, Gwi-ju's young daughter, while Oh Man-seok plays the family patriarch, Bok Joon-woo. Each character's particular loss makes the show's supernatural rules inseparable from the family's difficulties with grief, sleep, body image, and strained relationships at home. Chun Woo-hee stars as Do Da-hae, a mysterious woman who becomes involved with the Boks. Her arrival changes Gwi-ju's life and drives the central romance and suspense. Da-hae is not simply a visitor: she is connected to a scheme targeting the family, and the story gradually exposes motives and loyalties around her. The series therefore balances its supernatural premise with a con plot and a relationship between two people carrying trauma. Gwi-ju's ability is especially limited: he can revisit only past scenes in which he was happy, and he cannot alter events there. That rule shapes emotional stakes for Gwi-ju. Jo Hyun-taek directed The Atypical Family, and Joo Hwa-mi wrote it. Jo previously directed the acclaimed dramas Sky Castle and Snowdrop, while Joo wrote Marriage, Not Dating. The series marked Jang Ki-yong's return to television after completing mandatory military service. It premiered after his 2023 discharge. Its final episode aired June 9, 2024, on JTBC. The twelve-episode format gives the narrative time to reveal the family's secrets and Da-hae's connection to them. Netflix made the show available beyond Korea, carrying the JTBC drama to international viewers during its original run. The series combines domestic melodrama, fantasy, romance, and mystery elements.
