Reincarnated as a Sword

Reincarnated as a Sword is a Japanese television anime adapted from Yuu Tanaka’s light novel series, illustrated by Llo. Its Japanese title, Tensei shitara Ken deshita, literally identifies its unusual premise: an unnamed man who died in a car accident awakens in another world as a self-aware sword. Rather than following a human adventurer who obtains a weapon, the series makes the weapon its narrator and central consciousness. He initially lies embedded in the ground, unable to move until Fran, a young girl of the Black Cat Tribe, discovers him while escaping goblins. The sword uses telekinesis and the skills gained by absorbing magic stones to save her. Fran calls him Teacher, and their partnership becomes the story’s anchor. Her goal is to evolve her tribe, whose members have never achieved the higher form she seeks; Teacher supports that ambition while also teaching her combat and survival. The anime was produced by C2C and directed by Shinji Ishihira. Takahiro Nagano handled series composition, Atsuki Saitō designed the characters, and Yasuharu Takanashi composed the music. It ran for twelve episodes from October 5, 2022, through December 21, 2022, on Tokyo MX and other Japanese stations. Sentai Filmworks licensed the series and HIDIVE streamed it outside Asia. The Japanese opening theme is “Tensei shitara Ken deshita” by Kishida Kyoudan and The Akeboshi Rockets, while Maon Kurosaki performed the ending theme, “more<STRONGLY.” The television version concentrates on Fran and Teacher’s travels after they register with the Adventurers Guild in Alessa. Their adventures bring them into conflict with monsters and criminal groups, but its defining relationship is the protective bond between an experienced, disembodied adult and an intensely determined child. Ai Kakuma voices Fran in Japanese, while Shinichiro Miki voices Teacher. Before the anime, Tanaka began publishing the story as a web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in October 2015. Micro Magazine later issued the light novels under its GC Novels imprint, beginning in July 2016, and Tomowo Maruyama drew a manga adaptation. This publication history matters because the anime adapts a franchise already built around Fran and Teacher’s continuing quest, rather than presenting a standalone original concept. A second anime season was announced immediately after the first season’s final episode, confirming that the televised adaptation would continue beyond its initial twelve-episode run. The announcement appeared on the anime’s website and social media accounts on December 21, 2022, the date episode twelve aired in Japan.
