Superman Reboot will be directed by Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn

The new reboot for Superman, and consequently for DC's whole cinematic universe, Superman: Legacy will have Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn as an integral part of the production. He will take on the tough job of directing the first installment in the new DC universe with a new version of Superman, the beloved character for all DC Comics fans.

This news broke after James Gunn himself talked about it last week, and this week the famous director confirmed via a twitter thread on his personal account on the platform. After taking over as chairman and CEO of DC Studios, this next step for Gunn was not an easy decision to make, as the director and writer wasn't sure about how he would improve, or even revolutionize, how we see Superman in this new decade for the DC cinematic universe.

"I was offered Superman years ago — I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved."

Superman: Legacy will come to theaters on July 11th, 2025, according to the director. It will show a younger Clark Kent (and therefore, most likely won't include Henry Cavill as the main star), taking on a new version of the universe and the character, as the latest Flash movie, The Flash is rumored to tackle on a resetting of the whole universe through the hero's famous time-travelling storylines.

It was an emotional decision for Gunn to take on the tough job of reimagining, writing and directing what will basically be a rebirth of the DC universe as we know it. He is, after all, known for his irreverent and humorous atmosphere, which brought Guardians of the Galaxy to the successful status it has today. Inspired by his own family, Gunn talked about how he will use this theme to connect to Superman in a deeper level:

"I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him."

"A bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes."

The movie will mark what is being called the "Gods and Monsters" period in the new DC cinematic universe, the Phase 1 for their new direction.
