Michelle Yeoh will be honored with the Asian Filmmaker of the Year award at the 31st Busan International Film Festival in South Korea. The annual distinction recognizes an Asian professional or organization for exceptional contributions to the advancement of cinema on the continent.The presentation will take place at the event's opening ceremony, scheduled for October 6 at the Busan Cinema Center. Actress Kim Minha, known for Pachinko, will host the evening. The festival runs from October 6 to 15, while the 21st Asian Contents & Film Market is scheduled for October 10 to 13.Born in Malaysia in 1962, Yeoh began her career in Hong Kong action cinema with Yes, Madam! in 1985. She later appeared in productions such as Police Story 3: Supercop and Wing Chun, helping expand the space for female leads in the genre.Her international profile gained momentum with 007 - Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997 and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, released in 2000. More recently, the actress appeared in titles such as Crazy Rich Asians, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, A Haunting in Venice, Wicked, and Star Trek: Section 31.In 2022, Yeoh became the first Asian artist to win the Oscar for Best Actress for Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film's awards season also earned her wins at the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes. Earlier this year, she also became the first Asian woman to receive the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival.The actress's relationship with Busan began in 2002. Since then, she has returned to the event with films such as Far North, Reign of Assassins, The Lady, Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy, and Everything Everywhere All at Once.To mark the tribute, the festival will screen a special program featuring three works selected by Yeoh herself: Reign of Assassins, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and Sandiwara. Her new feature film, It's My Time, will also be presented as part of the retrospective dedicated to the star's career.
