That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is a Japanese television anime adapted from Fuse’s light novel series, illustrated by Mitz Vah. Its Japanese title, Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken, follows Satoru Mikami, a 37-year-old office worker who is stabbed while protecting a colleague from an assailant. He awakens in a fantasy world as a slime and receives abilities through the disembodied voice called the Great Sage. After naming the imprisoned Storm Dragon Veldora, he takes the name Rimuru Tempest.

The first television season aired in Japan from October 2018 to March 2019 and contained 24 episodes. Produced by Eight Bit, the series was directed by Yasuhito Kikuchi, with Atsushi Nakayama serving as assistant director; Kazuyuki Fudeyasu handled series composition and Risa Takai designed the characters. Elements Garden composed the music. The adaptation begins with Rimuru’s meeting with goblins in the Jura Forest, then charts his alliances with dwarves, ogres, lizardmen, and other monsters. Rather than simply seeking power, Rimuru establishes the Jura Tempest Federation, a settlement intended to let its varied inhabitants live and trade safely. The first opening theme was “Nameless Story” by Takuma Terashima.

Season two was split into two cours. Its first part aired from January to March 2021, after the spin-off The Slime Diaries aired during the spring slot; the second part followed from July to September 2021. This season adapts the conflict triggered by the Kingdom of Falmuth’s attack on Tempest, including Rimuru’s evolution into a Demon Lord and the emergence of the demon Diablo as his subordinate. It also introduces the Demon Lord Walpurgis meeting and puts Rimuru in direct opposition to Clayman. The series’ cast includes Miho Okasaki as Rimuru, Megumi Toyoguchi as Great Sage, and Tomoaki Maeno as Veldora.

A third season began airing in April 2024. It continues after the founding and recognition of Tempest and brings the Holy Knight Hinata Sakaguchi back into Rimuru’s story, following their earlier clash. The franchise has also received the 2022 film That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond, whose original story involves the country of Raja and the ogre survivor Hiiro. Television side stories include The Slime Diaries: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and The Vision of Coleus. Across its main adaptation, the show combines nation-building, diplomatic negotiations, comic everyday scenes, and battles involving named skills, monsters, humans, and Demon Lords. It was renewed for season four and a second film.
