That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

A Japanese fantasy anime where Satoru Mikami reincarnates after death as slime Rimuru Tempest and founds the Jura Tempest Federation of monsters.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is a Japanese television anime based on Fuse’s light novel series, whose illustrations are by Mitz Vah. The story starts when Satoru Mikami, a 37-year-old corporate employee, is stabbed while saving a coworker from an assailant. After dying, he hears a mysterious voice interpreting his final thoughts as requests. Reborn in another world as a slime, he gains the skills Predator and Great Sage. Predator lets him consume targets and acquire their abilities; Great Sage analyzes information and advises him. In a cave, he befriends the Storm Dragon Veldora, imprisoned there for three centuries, and takes the name Rimuru Tempest after naming the dragon. Rimuru then emerges into the Jura Forest and aids a goblin village threatened by direwolves. His naming magic gives the goblins and wolves individual names, while the defeated wolf leader becomes Ranga. These early alliances grow into the Jura Tempest Federation, a monster-led nation that attracts goblins, dwarves, ogres, lizardmen, and other peoples. Rimuru’s stated aim is coexistence among monsters and humans, but negotiations, trade, war, and demon lords repeatedly test Tempest. The series combines nation-building with fantasy battles, as Rimuru’s expanding powers alter the balance of the world. The first television season was produced by Eight Bit and aired from October 2018 to March 2019. Yasuhito Kikuchi directed it, with Atsushi Nakayama serving as assistant director; Kazuyuki Fudeyasu handled series composition, and Ryōma Ebata designed the characters. Its opening theme songs were “Nameless Story” by Takuma Terashima and “Meguru Mono” by Terashima. The second television season aired in two parts: the first ran from January to March 2021, and the second from July to September 2021. Eight Bit again animated it. Between those parts, the spin-off anime The Slime Diaries aired from April to June 2021, depicting Tempest’s life. A theatrical film, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: The Movie – Scarlet Bond, opened in Japan in November 2022. The original story centers on a new conflict involving Raja, a country west of Tempest, and the character Hiiro. The third television season began broadcasting in April 2024, continuing the adaptation of Rimuru’s story. Across its episodes, Rimuru is voiced in Japanese by Miho Okasaki, whose performance anchors a protagonist who retains memories from his human life. The show also adapts a world with formal monster naming, adventurer ranks, church politics, and competing demon lords, including Milim Nava.
