Severance is an American science-fiction psychological thriller created by Dan Erickson for Apple TV+. Its first season debuted on February 18, 2022, and follows employees of Lumon Industries, a biotechnology company that offers a controversial surgical procedure called severance. The operation divides a person’s work memories from memories of life outside the office. At Lumon’s basement workplace, “innies” know only their jobs; beyond it, “outies” retain no knowledge of what happens during the workday. The show uses that premise to examine consent, corporate control, grief, identity, and the unsettling consequences of treating a worker as a separate human being. Adam Scott plays Mark Scout, whose decision to undergo severance is connected to the death of his wife, Gemma. Inside Lumon, Mark works in the Macrodata Refinement division with Dylan George, portrayed by Zach Cherry; Irving Bailiff, played by John Turturro; and newcomer Helly Riggs, played by Britt Lower. Their supervisor is Seth Milchick, played by Tramell Tillman, while Christopher Walken plays Burt Goodman, Lumon’s Optics and Design chief. Patricia Arquette portrays Harmony Cobel, Mark’s neighbor and Lumon manager, who is also known as Mrs. Selvig. Dichen Lachman plays Gemma, and Jen Tullock plays Mark’s sister, Devon, in the series. Season one begins when Helly’s innie repeatedly resists a life she did not choose, making the severed floor’s ethical conflict immediate. Mark’s team is told to sort mysterious numerical data into digital bins, but Lumon withholds a clear explanation of what the work accomplishes. As the refiners investigate company rules and hidden relationships, they encounter wellness counselor Ms. Casey, security chief Doug Graner, and the eerie Break Room, where employees are compelled to repeat apologies. The season finale, “The We We Are,” was written by Erickson and directed by Stiller. It ends with several innies briefly awakening in their outies’ lives. Ben Stiller directed six of the first season’s nine episodes and served as an executive producer; Aoife McArdle directed the other three. The series’ distinctive production design includes Lumon’s stark, maze-like offices, filmed largely at Bell Works in Holmdel, New Jersey, a former Bell Labs complex. Theodore Shapiro composed its score, including the recognizable main-title music. Severance received 14 Primetime Emmy Award nominations for its first season, including Outstanding Drama Series, and won awards for its music composition and main title design. Apple TV+ renewed the program for a second season in April 2022. Season two premiered January 17, 2025.
