Reincarnated as a Sword is a Japanese television anime adaptation of Yuu Tanaka’s light-novel series, illustrated by Llo. Its Japanese title, Tensei shitara Ken deshita, literally identifies its unusual premise: an unnamed man dies and is reborn in another world as an intelligent sword. Rather than receiving a human body, he awakens in a forest with telekinetic movement and the ability to absorb skills from creatures he defeats.
He eventually becomes trapped in the ground until Fran, a young Black Cat girl, frees him. Fran names the sword Teacher, and their partnership becomes the story’s center. Teacher supplies magical knowledge, combat support, and powerful abilities; Fran supplies the mobility and determination that let them travel together. Her personal goal is to evolve her persecuted Black Cat race, whose members have not achieved that advancement.
The anime was produced by C2C and directed by Shinji Ishihira. Series composition was handled by Atsuki Saito, while Yasuharu Takanashi composed the music. It premiered on October 5, 2022, and concluded on December 21, 2022, after twelve episodes. In Japan, it aired on Tokyo MX, ABC, and BS Asahi; Sentai Filmworks licensed the show for distribution outside Asia, and HIDIVE streamed it.
Early episodes follow their encounters with goblins, monsters, and adventurers as they seek work and safety beyond the forest. At Alessa’s Adventurers’ Guild, Fran registers as an adventurer while Teacher conceals that he is a sentient weapon. The guild storyline introduces Klimt, Alessa’s guildmaster, and Amanda, an A-rank elven adventurer known as the Guardian of Children. Amanda takes a protective interest in Fran, reflecting the series’ concern with Fran’s vulnerability despite her remarkable fighting ability.
The adaptation emphasizes the contrast between Teacher’s adult memories and Fran’s direct, often enthusiastic approach to adventure. Their fights make use of the sword’s accumulated skills and magic alongside Fran’s swordsmanship, rather than treating Teacher merely as equipment. The first season ends with the pair still travelling together, leaving their larger journey open. A second season was announced after the television anime’s finale.
The anime’s opening theme, “Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita,” is performed by Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets. Its ending theme, “more<STRONGLY,” was performed by Maon Kurosaki. By centering a reincarnation fantasy on a weapon and its young wielder, the series distinguishes its adventure from stories whose transported protagonists act alone. Fran’s ambition to help Black Cats evolve gives their quests a personal and social purpose.
