Connect

Connect is a six-episode South Korean science-fiction horror series released on Disney+ on December 7, 2022. It adapts the webtoon of the same name by Shin Dae-sung and was directed by Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike, marking Miike’s first Korean drama series. It was produced as a Disney+ original. Disney+ released all six episodes together on its scheduled December premiere date. Jung Hae-in plays Ha Dong-soo, a man who belongs to a humanlike race called “Connect.” A Connect can regenerate wounds and is effectively immortal, but Dong-soo’s unusual body makes him a target. Organ traffickers abduct him, operate on him, and remove one of his eyes. During his escape, the missing eye is transplanted into Oh Jin-seop, played by Go Kyung-pyo. Jin-seop is not merely an unwilling recipient: he is a serial killer whose murders become central to the story. The transplant gives Dong-soo a disturbing connection to Jin-seop. He can see through the eye now in Jin-seop’s body, witnessing crimes and locations from the killer’s perspective. Jin-seop, meanwhile, becomes aware that the eye has not become an ordinary part of him. Their shared vision turns the series into a pursuit in which Dong-soo tries to recover what was taken and stop the murders, while Jin-seop seeks to understand and exploit the extraordinary organ he received. Kim Hye-jun co-stars as Lee I-rang, a mysterious woman who helps Dong-soo and has knowledge of Connects. The principal supporting cast includes Kim Roe-ha as Choi, an organ-harvesting gang leader, and Jang Gwang as the character known as the Doctor. The drama’s premise combines body horror, crime-thriller investigation, and supernatural action rather than treating regeneration as a conventional superhero power. Before its streaming debut, Connect screened at the 27th Busan International Film Festival in October 2022, where its first three episodes were presented. Miike is known for Japanese films such as Audition, Ichi the Killer, and 13 Assassins. The narrative is built around the ethical horror of commodified bodies. Dong-soo’s eye is stolen through an illegal organ operation, and the recipient’s identity makes the loss far more consequential than a personal injury. The show’s title describes the literal psychic bond created by that theft: Dong-soo and Jin-seop are connected by sight, even while they struggle for control of the same eye. Across its compact six-episode run, Connect follows the escalating consequences of that bond and Dong-soo’s effort to confront the man who carries part of him.
