Netflix's new drama series brings together Nicola Coughlan, Naomi Scott, Dominic West and Imelda Staunton for stories aimed at adults by Roald Dahl.

Netflix is adapting Roald Dahl's adult short stories into a new drama series starring Nicola Coughlan, Naomi Scott, Dominic West and Imelda Staunton.

The story follows a young couple isolated in a decaying seaside town. As they try to escape before their own fate is sealed, they encounter con artists, adulterers, murderous mothers and snake charmers.

The project moves away from the better-known children's works by Dahl, the author of Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The new series draws on stories written for adult audiences and will bring characters such as The Landlady, Mister Boggis and the mysterious Fingersmith into a contemporary setting.

Danny Brocklehurst is writing the series. The writer is known for his work on Fool Me Once, Netflix's adaptation of Harlan Coben's novel.

In a statement, Brocklehurst linked the adaptation to his own career.

The screenwriter said the author's “gripping, macabre and always unexpected” tales created vibrant, larger-than-life characters. He also said he was excited about the partnership between Orchid Pictures, Netflix and the cast.

Alongside Coughlan, Scott, West and Staunton, the cast will include Josh Finan, Toby Jones, Carmen Ejogo, Christine Tremarco, Michael Socha and Clarke Peters. Netflix has yet to announce the series' title or release date.
