Dan Stevens hopes the live-action RoboCop series will preserve the extreme violence and satire that defined the original films. The actor has been cast as Alex Murphy and his cyborg alter ego in the Prime Video production.

In an interview, Stevens said the original film is one of his all-time favorites and shaped his relationship with the genre. When discussing what excites him most about the project, he pointed to the very elements that helped define the 1987 film.

“My God, so much,” the actor said before highlighting the film’s influence. For Stevens, RoboCop was an iconic movie and one of the first films he and many of his friends saw that combined extreme violence with satire. Preserving those two elements is the actor’s central hope for the series.

The story follows a massive technology conglomerate that convinces a city to integrate a powerful robot into its police force. The system is given the consciousness of Alex Murphy, a decorated police officer killed in the line of duty, transforming him into a cyborg designed to fight crime.

The first season will consist of eight episodes. Peter Ocko, of Pushing Daisies, has been confirmed as showrunner, while James Wan will executive produce through Atomic Monster. Michael Clear and Rob Hackett will also serve as executive producers, with Danielle Bozzone overseeing the project.

Wan said he is a RoboCop fan and described helping bring the universe to television as a dream. For the producer, the questions Paul Verhoeven raised about technology, identity and the role of corporations have become even more urgent.

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the series has not yet received a premiere date. RoboCop is available on Prime Video.
