The new Resident Evil film could post the biggest opening in the franchise’s history in the United States. Early projections put its first-weekend domestic box office between US$ 40 million and US$ 50 million.

If that result holds, the reboot will surpass the US$ 26.6 million earned by Resident Evil 4: Recomeço, currently the franchise’s opening-weekend record holder. The gap would be even wider compared with Resident Evil: Bem-Vindo a Raccoon City, released in 2021, which opened to US$ 5.3 million in the American market.

Directed by Zach Cregger, whose credits include A Hora do Mal, the film has received an R rating in the US. The MPAA cites “extreme violence, gore and language,” restricting screenings to adult audiences.

Cregger has already said this will be his most violent film as a director. According to him, the aim was to push the grotesque and bloody elements to the limit. The filmmaker also explained that the story will not focus on the Umbrella Corporation or how the T-virus works.

The plot follows an ordinary man facing monsters, in an approach that, in the director’s words, launches into the action within the first few minutes. Zach Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, whose credits include Army of the Dead: Invasão em Las Vegas.

The cast includes Zach Cherry, known for Ruptura, Kali Reis, of True Detective: Terra Noturna, and Paul Walter Hauser, of O Caso Richard Jewell. Constantin Film is producing the reboot alongside PlayStation Productions.

Resident Evil: Bem-Vindo a Raccoon City, the previous live-action adaptation, ended its theatrical run with US$ 41.9 million in worldwide box office returns against a US$ 25 million production budget. The new Resident Evil opens in theaters nationwide on 17 September.
