Lanterns premieres this Sunday (16) on HBO Max, marking Hal Jordan's return to the DC Universe in live action after 15 years. The series expands the universe overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran by bringing three members of the Green Lantern Corps into the story.

Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart, while Kyle Chandler takes on the role of Hal Jordan. Nathan Fillion returns as Guy Gardner, a character already introduced in the new DCU. Across eight weekly episodes, the series follows John's training as a new member of the Corps.

The story unfolds in a small Nebraska town. During an investigation, John Stewart and Hal Jordan uncover an alien conspiracy that could threaten the very integrity of the Green Lantern Corps. The series blends police procedural suspense with science fiction as it explores the partnership between the two heroes.

Among the productions that can help set the mood is the first season of True Detective. Also spanning eight episodes, the series follows detectives Rust, played by Matthew McConaughey, and Marty, portrayed by Woody Harrelson, whose lives become tied for 17 years to the investigation into the murder of Dora Lange in Louisiana. The season has been cited several times as the main inspiration for Lanterns.

The film Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds, tells the origin story of Hal Jordan, a test pilot chosen to wield the power ring. In the story, he faces distrust from the Corps, which does not recognize his worthiness as a potential Green Lantern.

To follow the connections to the new DC Universe, Superman, released in 2025 and written and directed by James Gunn, introduces Guy Gardner and showcases aspects of the Corps members' powers and differences. Both seasons of Peacemaker, also by Gunn, add investigations, science fiction, alien invasions and alternate realities to the setting leading up to the premiere of Lanterns.
