An extended preview of Grand Theft Auto VI became Netflix’s most-watched title worldwide last week, outperforming films and series. The 27-minute video debuted on the platform on August 27 and drew 31.1 million views globally over the weekend.

The result put the video at the top of Netflix’s global list of English-language films. It also led the rankings in 87 of the 93 countries where the platform tracks viewing data.

Six hours after the Netflix premiere, Rockstar Games released the same video on YouTube. At the time of publication, it had amassed 17 million views on the platform. The figures cannot be compared directly, however: YouTube counts a view as soon as the video starts playing, while Netflix calculates the total by dividing the number of hours watched by the content’s running time.

Captured entirely with footage of the game running on PlayStation 5, the preview offers the most detailed look yet at the franchise’s upcoming release. Grand Theft Auto VI arrives 13 years after the previous installment.

Released in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V still holds the record for the biggest launch in entertainment history, generating US$ 1 billion in its first three days. The response to the extended preview has further heightened anticipation for the new game.

On the English-language film list, The Whisper Man ranked second, with 23.2 million views over the weekend. Among English-language series, Death of a Pastor’s Wife debuted at No. 1, with 19 million views.
