The 78th Emmy Awards wrapped up its awards season on Monday (14) with a night of twists, records and favorites sharing the spotlight with surprises. The biggest winner was “The Secret of Widow’s Bay”, the Apple TV comedy that confirmed the momentum it had already shown during the Creative Arts ceremonies, held on September 5 and 6.The series finished as the year’s top winner, taking 14 statuettes from 19 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The production also won acting awards for Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root, along with wins for writing and directing. Rhys added to the achievement by winning two lead-actor Emmys on the same night, as he was also honored for “The Monster in Me”.Among dramas, “The Pitt” came into the Emmys with 25 nominations and left with seven trophies. The series won Outstanding Drama Series and secured Noah Wyle the award for Outstanding Actor, but lost ground in the supporting categories. Tom Pelphrey, from “Task”, beat three actors from the medical drama, while Allison Janney, from “The Diplomat”, won a race that included four actresses from “The Pitt”.“Hacks”, which led the comedy field with 24 nominations for its final season, lost the genre’s top prize to “The Secret of Widow’s Bay”. Even so, Jean Smart marked her farewell with a historic feat: she won Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth consecutive time.The winners list also gave “DTF St. Louis” a prominent place. The production tied with “The Pitt” at seven wins and took Outstanding Limited Series. Rhea Seehorn won Outstanding Actress in a Drama for “Pluribus”, while Sally Field was recognized as Outstanding Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or TV Movie for “Remarkably Bright Creatures”.
