Nicolas Cage has indicated that he may star in the fifth season of True Detective. The actor mentioned the possibility during a Spotlight panel at New York Comic-Con, while discussing how he plans to balance film and television work.

“I’ll probably do another television season. I think I might do a season of True Detective,” Cage said during the event. He then asked whether he could be the first to announce the news, but the project has not yet been officially confirmed.

Cage has been in talks for a role in the series since last year. He is also currently working on the film Perish, a project mentioned during the discussion of his upcoming commitments.

The actor also explained why he does not plan to work again with the studio behind Spider-Noir, a Prime Video series that will have a single season. Cage said Amazon is “very pro-AI” and stated that he had not signed a release allowing his likeness to be used by artificial intelligence in the production.

““I probably won’t work with that studio again, but that’s okay.””

The statement came alongside a broader criticism of the adoption of the technology. Cage said he does not consider himself an actor who supports AI and cited Amazon’s US$ 50 billion investment in OpenAI as part of his assessment of the company.

The actor also said he prefers collaborating with young Generation Z directors, including professionals influenced by YouTube culture. In Cage’s view, these creators are producing their work “from scratch and by hand,” an approach he would like to pursue in his upcoming projects.

The potential appearance in True Detective comes as HBO has yet to officially confirm the cast or details of the fifth season.
