Hiroshi Ohnogi

Hiroshi Ohnogi is a Japanese anime screenwriter whose documented work includes major entries in the Macross franchise. His credits are especially connected to the television series Macross 7, the theatrical short Macross 7: The Galaxy Is Calling Me!, the OVA Macross Dynamite 7, and the prequel OVA Macross Zero. Rather than treating those titles as interchangeable sequel assignments, Ohnogi’s work belongs to stories with sharply different premises, periods, and settings within the same fictional continuity. First broadcast in Japan from 1994 to 1995, Macross 7 has 49 television episodes. It follows Nekki Basara, the vocalist and guitarist of Fire Bomber, aboard the emigrant fleet Macross 7. Basara’s defining response to the fleet’s war with the Protodeviln is to sing, often in direct opposition to the military logic surrounding him. Ohnogi is credited among the series’ writers, placing him within the production of this unusually music-centered Macross narrative. The franchise’s 1995 companion film, Macross 7: The Galaxy Is Calling Me!, again uses Basara and Fire Bomber, but sends Basara to a planet where he encounters Emilia Jenius, a singer and member of the Jenius family. Ohnogi received a writing credit for the film. The project is compact beside the television run, yet it is a distinct production rather than a retitled episode, and it preserves the franchise’s connection between combat, performance, and communication. Macross Dynamite 7, a four-episode OVA released from 1997 to 1998, takes Basara to the planet Zola. There he becomes involved with Elma Hoily and a dispute in which giant space whales are pursued by poachers. Ohnogi is credited as writer on this continuation. Its Zola setting, ecological conflict, and whale imagery distinguish it from the fleet warfare of the television program, even though Basara’s singing remains central to the drama. Macross Zero is set in 2008, before the events of The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, and was released as a five-part OVA between 2002 and 2004. Its central character is UN Spacy pilot Shin Kudo, who is shot down near Mayan Island during the U.N. Wars. The series connects the conflict involving Shin, anti-U.N. pilot Nora Poliansky, and Mayan traditions to the earlier history of the SDF-1 Macross. Ohnogi is credited for its series composition and scripts. These credits identify a writer repeatedly engaged with Macross across television, film, and original-video formats, from an established sequel to a historical prequel in multiple eras.
