Yhwach is the emperor of the Wandenreich and progenitor of the Quincy in Bleach. He leads the Sternritter against the Soul Society and seeks to reshape the world after absorbing the Soul King.

Edit reference

Yhwach is the principal antagonist of Tite Kubo’s Bleach during the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. He is introduced as the emperor of the Wandenreich, a hidden Quincy empire whose soldiers, the Sternritter, invade Soul Society from the Schatten Bereich, a shadow realm connected to the Seireitei. His name is presented with the pronunciation “Juha Bach” in English-language material, while the manga uses Yhwach. He leads the Quincy in a campaign against the Shinigami, reviving a conflict rooted in the destruction of Quincy communities by Soul Reapers, who feared the imbalance Quincy extermination could cause between worlds and the afterlife itself.

His followers receive Schrift letters and distinctive powers, and their strength eventually returns to him. The Sternritter call him Majesty, but several also fear Auswählen, the ritual by which Yhwach reclaims power and life from selected Quincy. He uses it against the impure Quincy, including the mixed-blood Gemischt, and later restores chosen Sternritter after his first defeat. This ability reflects the character’s conception of rulership: subordinates are not merely allies but extensions of his body and soul. His elite Schutzstaffel, including Lille Barro, Gerard Valkyrie, Pernida Parnkgjas, and Askin Nakk Le Vaar, guard him in the Royal Palace above all.

Yhwach wields the medallion technology that lets the Wandenreich steal Bankai, helping his invasion overwhelm captains who rely on those ultimate Zanpakutō releases. He personally kills Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto after first confronting a decoy created by Royd Lloyd. The genuine Yhwach takes Yamamoto’s Bankai, Zanka no Tachi, with a medallion, then destroys the Captain-Commander. Later, after entering the Soul King Palace, he confronts Ichigo Kurosaki, Aizen, Uryū Ishida, and the Royal Guard’s survivors. His selection of Uryū as successor, despite Uryū’s mixed heritage, creates suspicion among the Sternritter and gives the story a crucial internal conflict within his own ranks.

The defining ability called The Almighty allows Yhwach to perceive and alter futures. After regaining it, he treats future possibilities as visible paths and can choose outcomes favorable to himself; this makes direct combat with him unusually difficult. His larger aim is to end the divided order maintained by the Soul King and restore a single world without death, fear, or separation. To achieve this, he absorbs the Soul King after the King is mortally wounded and attempts to merge the realms. In the climax, Ichigo cuts him with the Tensa Zangetsu after Aizen’s illusion and Uryū’s Still Silver arrow create the opening.
